SCORE IS LOWEST EVER RECORDED AT OCEAN CLUB GOLF COURSE
January 25, 2016, Paradise Island, Bahamas – Disappointed when one poor round cost her full status at the recently completed LPGA Qualifying Tournament, Christine Song fired a bogey-free 9-under-par 64 to win the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic qualifier Monday at Ocean Club Golf Course. Song, 24, who had never entered a Monday qualifier before, shot the lowest recorded round at the Ocean Club.
Ernie Els holds the men’s course record of 65, and Paula Creamer fired a 65 in the second round of the 2014 edition on the way to finishing tied for third behind winner Jessica Korda.
“I guess I wanted a little revenge after Q-School,” said Song, a California native who lives in Knoxville, Tenn. “I had one bad round and that ended up really hurting me, but I came out today and played well. It was a lot of fun out there.”
Song carded a final-round 76 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., to finish tied for 19th, but she lost a three-hole playoff among three players and fell to 21st, just outside of earning full status for 2016. Song will play this year with limited category 17 membership.
Brittany Altomare of Shrewsbury, Mass., shot 68 to win the other qualifying spot and complete the field of 108 who will compete in the fourth edition of the $1.4 million Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic starting Thursday. A record 38 players competed in the qualifier.
The field is headlined by Inbee Park, the No. 2 player in the Rolex World Rankings, and No. 3 Stacy Lewis, and defending champion Sei Young Kim, the 2015 Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year. Former winners Korda and 2013 champion Ilhee Lee also are entered. Bahamas native Georgette Rolle, who won the Bahamas Golf Federation qualifier in December, will compete for the third time.
Song converted nine birdies for her personal best score at the Ocean Club, but a par save at the par-5 fourth hole was key, she said. After a poor drive, she pushed her second shot into a bush and had to punch out. But from 90 yards she struck her approach to 2 feet.
“That was really important to keep my momentum going,” she said. “I just hope I didn’t use it all up today. Now that I’m here I want to do well.”
