December 11, 2017 – Global Golf Management, a worldwide leader in event management, enjoyed a historic night in its history Dec. 7 when two PGA TOUR events under its purview were named Charity of the Year during the PGA TOUR’s annual meetings in Boca Raton, Fla.
On the PGA TOUR, the Puerto Rico Open received the honor, and on the Web.com Tour, it was the Rex Hospital Open in Raleigh, N.C. Each event was awarded $30,000 for its main charitable beneficiary, the Carvin School and the Rex Healthcare Foundation, respectively. The awards are the first in GGM’s history. The awards are determined by a vote of tournament directors on the respective tours.
“This award is a testament to the great things the Rex Healthcare Foundation and UNC REX Healthcare have done through hosting professional golf in Raleigh for 30 years,” said Brian Krusoe, Tournament Director. “This award and the $30,000 donation will go a long way to help people in our community. This is a tremendous honor that everyone associated with our tournament should be very proud of.”
The Rex Hospital Open contributed an all-time record $470,000 to the Rex Healthcare Foundation in 2017, and the funds were used to support the opening of the new NC Heart and Vascular Hospital on the main UNC REX Campus.
Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Maria in September. It was the 10th deadliest storm on record causing upwards of an estimated $90 billion in damages. That makes the $30,000 for the Carvin School, a non-profit, college preparatory institution in Puerto Rico, even more important after it suffered structural damage and was left without power and school supplies and equipment.
“We are very excited to receive this extra help at a very critical time,” said Pablo Zarattini, tournament director of the Puerto Rico Open. “It means a lot, this award. The school, it got hit hard, and we are going to use those funds to fix their gymnasium. You know, sports is healthy. Nothing bad can happen with sports. It’s a good investment for the money.”
Since 2008, the Carvin School students have assisted with the tournament such as serving as standard bearers and walking scorers, and alumni often return to serve as volunteers.
“This was a huge night for our organization, and we couldn’t be more proud of what our respective teams have been able to accomplish,” said Jeff Raedle, president of GGM. “We have excellent teams at each tournament, great leadership, and as rewarding as this is for all of us, we couldn’t be happier for the charities involved to be receiving additional funds to help people in need.”
